Reykjavik CathedralReykjavik Cathedral or the Hallgrimskirka, as it is called in Iceland, took 42 years to build, from 1945 to 1986. The architect, Guojon Samuelson, said that the columns on the side of the main tower are meant to represent Icelandic volcanic basalt rock that was instantly petrified after its molten lava met the frigid Atlantic Ocean.
